Responsibilities of your role 

Reporting to the Media & PR Manager, this 3 month contract will join a dynamic team and coordinate the implementation of the media relations program for MSF in Australia and New Zealand.    

With the overall objective of increasing the visibility of MSF’s medical and humanitarian actions and advocate for the needs of our patients. This accountable role will focus on: 

  • Follow up key ongoing stories as specified by the Media & PR Manager 

  • Pitch stories of interest to Australian and New Zealand media, using Meltwater (or email for more targeted pitches) 

  • Brief MSFA spokespeople ahead of interviews 

  • Respond to reactive enquiries from journalists 

  • Liaise with MSF HQ and field comms staff to facilitate interview requests 

  • Monitor MSF Australia’s media coverage and produce media reports as required 

  • Share key media successes through MSF internal comms platforms 

  • Suggest media stories for promotion through MSF Australia’s social media accounts 

  • Provide other editorial and communications support as needed, which may include writing and editing content and drafting social media content 

  • Brief and debrief outgoing/incoming field workers  

  • Support the community engagement portfolio as needed 

 

What you will bring 

As an established communications professional, you are recognised for your integrity, your ability to critically assess engagement risks, and have a talent for identifying opportunities to enhance media visibility.  

Given the short term nature you will be able to hit the ground running and ideally can demonstrate:  

  • Tertiary qualifications in communications  

  • At least five years of experience in media relations, strategic communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, preferably within non-profits  

  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of the Australian and New Zealand media landscape including relevant media contacts 

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including experience with writing and editing press releases, opinion pieces and press releases.
